problem 1 continued
This post has been difficult for me to write. There are ideas churning in my head that I fail to understand in full... I will compensate by simple writing that we are:- organizing students into smaller groups based on their grade and class section,
- developing a weekly program of learning activities
- emphasizing punctuality and attendance
- requiring field reports after every taller

Carlos,
Smaller groups are GOOD! Helps kids feel more responsible for their own learning.
Here are two more ideas that we use with our kids (and adults!) in the clinic that are really helpful. We put an agenda on the board for each lesson--so kids know what activites are next, etc. We can use that agenda for "redirecting to task" as needed, and as motivation to get on to something fun (which is on the agenda).
If you're planning a week at a time, you might want to have an agenda for the week. Or for the day. Or whatever time frame would work for you!
Idea #2: as much as possible, we try to show learners' their progress in some visual way--how many more words they got right at the first try this week than last week, or over time, etc., etc. Kids love to see a bar graph that illustrates progress--they get very invested in being faster than last time, or getting more things right the first time without guessing (that's a big one for struggling readers who have a habit of just guessing!).
Anyway, use these ideas if they are helpful. And I just want to reiterate how excited I am that you're doing this good work!!
Ann
